What is Fine JEWELRY? | Jewelry Designer

(fun upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer with your Jewelry Minute and today I’m answering the question, what is fine jewelry? When people are asking this, they’re asking what is fine jewelry versus costume or how do I know that it’s fine jewelry? There is no legal definition for fine jewelry. When we talk about fine jewelry, we generally are talking about jewelry made from precious metals like gold or platinum and we’re talking about if it has stones that they are precious like diamonds and sapphires or what some people call semi-precious like aquamarine, jade, citrine, a number of different stones. Some people think it’s only fine jewelry…

What is VERMEIL Gold? | How to pronounce Vermeil

(upbeat lively music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute. Today I’m answering the question, what is vermeil? Some people will say, what is vermeil? They say that because they’ve read the word and haven’t heard the word, because it looks like it would be pronounced that way. But, the correct pronunciation is vermeil. Vermeil is quite simply silver that has been electroplated in gold. So, it’s silver with a very, very thin layer of gold on the outside. Sometimes we’ll call it a gold wash. It is electroplated gold. This has been done for a long time. It’s been done not only on jewelry, but also just…

Old MINE Cut Diamond | European Cut Diamonds

(lively music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute, and today, I’m answering the question what does mine cut mean? And sometimes you’ll hear mine cut, miner’s cut, old mine cut, old miner cut, and they’re usually referring to diamonds when we talk about this, but you can be referring to other stones. Old mine cut is not a specific, precise cut like we think of today. When we think of step cut, brilliant cut, it’s not precise like that. All it means is that the diamond was cut by hand, and it was cut by hand whatever way the person cutting it by hand wanted to cut…

What Are The Cardinal Gems? | Precious Gemstones

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer with ‘Your Jewelry Minute’ and today I’m answering the question “what are cardinal gems?” Or, “what are the cardinal gems?” And the cardinal gems, as they are called, were originally defined as diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald and amethyst. And the reason they were called the cardinal gems is that they were the most precious stones known to man and were reserved for royalty or the clergy. A lot of times in our history those are the only two classes of people that were permitted to wear these stones. One of these gems, the amethyst, which is a beautiful purple stone, was used by…

What Are FRESHWATER Pearls? | Biwa Pearls

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer, with your Jewelry Minute. And today, I’m answering the question, what is a freshwater pearl? Like the name implies, these pearls are formed in fresh water, by freshwater mussels. You’ll sometimes hear them called Biwa pearls, for the Biwa mussels that often produce freshwater pearls. It used to be that most freshwater pearls were made in Japan, but today, most freshwater pearls are made in China. And they can be in all different colors. They can be white, peach, pink, and sometimes even a blue or black kind of a color. They’re much less expensive than saltwater pearls, for a number of reasons.…

Why do Design Periods Overlap? | Antique Jewelry

(bright upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute, and today I’m answering the question, “Why do jewelry periods overlap?” And jewelry periods can sometimes be named for the royalty who was reigning at the time. So, a king or a queen, and that would be Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, that type of name. Or, they can be named for a style of jewelry that occurred in a specific period of time. That would be Art Nouveau or Art Deco. And this is why the time periods can sometimes overlap. Let’s take Art Nouveau, for example. Art Nouveau spans from 1890 to 1940. So, it does go between…
