What Are FRESHWATER Pearls? | Biwa Pearls

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer, with your Jewelry Minute. And today, I’m answering the question, what is a freshwater pearl? Like the name implies, these pearls are formed in fresh water, by freshwater mussels. You’ll sometimes hear them called Biwa pearls, for the Biwa mussels that often produce freshwater pearls. It used to be that most freshwater pearls were made in Japan, but today, most freshwater pearls are made in China. And they can be in all different colors. They can be white, peach, pink, and sometimes even a blue or black kind of a color. They’re much less expensive than saltwater pearls, for a number of reasons.…

You are here with me and with Donnie Grissom. – Hey y’all! – Donnie is an estate jeweler, and I am a jewelry designer. One of our viewers, Gin Kat, requested we do a video on how we got into the jewelry industry. And when we first met each other, neither of us was in the jewelry industry. So that has been a progression. And Donnie went into the jewelry industry first. When I first met him, he…

Why do Design Periods Overlap? | Antique Jewelry

(bright upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute, and today I’m answering the question, “Why do jewelry periods overlap?” And jewelry periods can sometimes be named for the royalty who was reigning at the time. So, a king or a queen, and that would be Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, that type of name. Or, they can be named for a style of jewelry that occurred in a specific period of time. That would be Art Nouveau or Art Deco. And this is why the time periods can sometimes overlap. Let’s take Art Nouveau, for example. Art Nouveau spans from 1890 to 1940. So, it does go between…

What Is a Water Sapphire? | Iolite

(bright music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute and today I’m answering the question, what is a water sapphire? A water sapphire is cordierite, but cordierite when it is gem quality, as we say, when it is transparent and a perfect shade of sorta blue or purple. We refer to that as iolite and iolite is a gem that we put in jewelry. And it can look a little like a sapphire. Usually, when you twist it, it’ll go from between sorta blue and purple. It’s a very beautiful color and it’s a beautiful stone. So iolite is sometimes called water sapphire and there were times in…

White GOLD vs Yellow Gold | What is White Gold

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer with “Your Jewelry Minute.” And today, I’m answering the question, what is the difference between white and yellow gold? Gold itself is an element. It is the color gold. There’s actually a color named after this metal. It is what it is. It is no other color, and it doesn’t tarnish, but gold is also very soft and malleable. It’s a beautiful metal. You can do a lot with it to decorate it, and it’s been used in jewelry throughout history, but we don’t generally wear just pure gold, because it is too soft. We alloy it with other metals, meaning we melt…

What Is A STAR Sapphire? | Gem Asterism

(bright music) – This is Jill Maurer with “Your Jewelry Minute” and today I’m answering the question, what is a star sapphire? A star sapphire, this occurs sometimes when we cut a sapphire into a cabochon. This is where it’s flat on the bottom and just polished on the top so there aren’t facets. And, sometimes, a sapphire will exhibit an asterism, which we call a star and it looks like a star of light in the sapphire. And when you move the sapphire, the star will follow the light. Sapphires have even been known to display a double asterism or a double star. It’s a very interesting look. Two…

What is RUBELLITE? | Rubellite Tourmaline

(playful music) – This is Jill Maurer with Your Jewelry Minute. And today I’m answering the question, what is rubellite? Some people think that rubellite isn’t real because it kind of sounds like a fake ruby. And it does get its name because it looks a lot like a ruby. But a rubellite is a natural stone. It is a tourmaline in the pink or red color family. And it can very much be confused for a ruby. In fact, there are a lot of famous, ancient pieces that were thought to have a ruby in them that turned out to be rubellite. They turned out to be pink or…
