What is a Ballerina Ring? | Vintage Jewelry

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer
with Your Jewelry Minute. And today I’m answering the question, what is a ballerina ring? A ballerina ring is a very special type of cluster ring. It is a cluster ring that is made to look like
the tutu of a ballerina, or it’s inspired by the
tutu of a ballerina. It is not a literal tutu. It is just inspired by that. Often it’s using baguettes
that are, sort of, in an undulating design. They can look very different. Usually there’s a center
stone or cluster of stones, and then you have what
is essentially a halo. It is diamonds or other stones around it, that undulate, to represent a tutu. They can be in a lot of different shapes. They can be in a round shape. They can be pear shaped. They can be sort of diamond,
or square, or rectangular. They can even be in a bypass shape. So it doesn’t have to be a round stone. It’s not necessarily
perfectly round like a tutu. It just is inspired by the tutu and the movement. They were first designed in the 1950s, and they remained very
popular through the 1970s. But, they continue to be made. They’re made even today. And this is a style that a lot of people feel is a classic style. They feel that this is a style
that will be around forever, that it has transcended
into a classic style. You will find a lot of this type of ring in vintage and estate jewelry cases. It was very, very popular
for a couple of decades. There were other pieces
made like this as well, including pendants and earrings. They’re not usually
referred to as ballerina. You’re not wrong if you
call it a ballerina pendant, but we usually use that term for a ring. We usually say a ballerina ring. The rings can be small. They can be smallish, or they they can be very,
very grand and opulent. This video was requested by GinKat. If you have a jewelry question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time! (upbeat music)
