What is a Doublet Gem? | Doublet Opal

(upbeat music) – This is Jill Maurer
with Your Jewelry Minute, and today I’m answering the question, what is a doublet? And a doublet is an assembled stone. It’s when two pieces are glued together. And they can be two natural pieces, like maybe when onyx and
opal are glued together, or it could be that one is
natural and one is manmade, so it could be, say,
turquoise glued onto glass. Now, why is the reason that we would want to create a doublet? There are three main reasons. The first is to add strength. If you have just a sliver of opal, it’s a beautiful stone, it
has great color and flash, and it’s very desirable,
a very desirable look, but it isn’t very strong. You can glue that opal
onto black glass or onyx, and it will add strength. The second reason is to enhance color. When you choose what to put that opal on, you would choose the material in a color that would enhance it, and in this case, putting
a sliver of white opal onto black glass can make
the color that is in the opal flash and sparkle even more. So the first is strength, and the second is enhancing color. The third reason you might wanna do it is you might want a stone
that looks different on two different sides. So if you take a flat-backed stone, two flat-backed stones
and glue them together, maybe a turquoise and a citrine, then, if you put it in a
necklace, when it flips, one side you’ll see the turquoise, and the other side,
you’ll see the citrine. So that would be the other reason is if you just wanna create more variety and a two-sided stone that
looks different on both sides. This has been Your Jewelry Minute. If you have a jewelry question for me, just ask me in the comments below. Until next time. (upbeat music)

Before even watching I remembered what a doublet is from you mentioning them before and using the example of the dreaded bad luck opal. I had not thought about a two sided necklace, though. Clever.

I love the idea of having a necklace that is 2 different looks. It allows a lot of versatility as well as let the wearer decide which fits their mood better in that moment. Plus a 2 for 1 is always a great deal lol! Thanks for the video Jill, can't wait for tomorrows!

Hmm…I just purchased a ring that has the stones set on a spindle. One side is black onyx and the other is turquoise. I didn't realize there was actually a name for it. Now I can call it my doublet ring!

I have never heard of a "Doublet" Interesting! If they can send a man to the moon, surely they can glue two stones together 😂
